The Galactic Rangers are a structured military organization that faced a significant internal crisis when their leader, Captain Qwark, was manipulated by Chairman Drek. The conflict began with the Blarg dismantling planets to build New Quartu because their home world of Quartu had become uninhabitable due to pollution. When the Rangers assaulted the Deplanetizer on Quartu, Qwark disabled their weapons at Drek's behest, allowing the villain to proceed with his plan. The organization's hierarchy was further tested when Qwark's betrayal was revealed, but Doctor Nefarious was never a former Ranger in the original canon; his backstory as a former Ranger originates from the 2016 reimagining. Despite these betrayals, the Rangers maintained their operational capacity, but it was Ratchet and Clank who destroyed the Deplanetizer's laser core on Quartu, not the Rangers moving the laser away from its target.

In Their Own Story

The crisis escalated when the defective warbot met Ratchet on Veldin before they traveled together to Kerwan to warn the Rangers of Drek's plan. Upon arrival, Ratchet and Clank saved the Rangers from an attack by Drek's warbots, earning immense popularity that pressured Captain Qwark to recruit them. However, jealousy led Qwark to accept an offer from Drek to disable the Rangers' weapons during a crucial assault on the Deplanetizer. During the battle, Drek's lieutenant Victor Von Ion boarded the flagship and attacked Clank, but Clank reduced him to a rusty wreck using a rainstorm-producing weapon. The situation worsened when Doctor Nefarious fired a sheep-transforming gun at Drek, ejected him in an escape pod, and took control of the superweapon. In the final confrontation, Qwark intercepted Ratchet and Clank but realized he had been used after Ratchet pleaded with him to stop. Together, they confronted Nefarious, who attempted to destroy Umbris, but the Rangers successfully moved the laser beam toward New Quartu, killing Drek upon his crash landing.

The Rangers' victory involved escaping through a teleporter as the Deplanetizer vaporized in Umbris's atmosphere. Following the resolution, Captain Qwark was demoted to Private and began an apology tour, while Ratchet promised to rejoin the Rangers if needed.
